SYF 2010: Marching & Display Bands

Go To: Page 1 Page 2

At 4pm, the much-awaited Display Band segment started! First off is top gun Tanjong Katong Secondary, brilliantly opening with Elisabeth. With other powerful tunes like Pirates of the Caribbean and With Heart and Voice combined with great enthusiasm and their new outfit, TK never fails to impress.

The second band was Ping Yi secondary, who based their display on songs from the musical Les Miserables. Coupled with fancy props, images and funny gimmicks involving the drum major himself, the band has definitely improved from yesteryears.

Bukit Panjang Government High’s display was rather unique, almost seeming to tell a story. Songs used were mostly symphonic poems like Orient Express, Song of Sailor & Sea and To Challenge the Skies and Heavens Above.

Next up, Yusof Ishak Secondary, marching to the tune of La Fiesta, Power Station, and Carribean Dream. And also, dancing to Nobody by Wonder Girls is definitely a crowd-pleaser. Smart move, guys!

The fourth band is Springfield Secondary, also playing Nobody by Wonder Girls, along with Silverado and a nice rendition of pop song I Will Survive.

Another favorite and previously thought underdog, Bowen Secondary! Majority of the display uses the all-too-famous Persis Overture. Wonderful stunts by the drum major as well as the band’s determination and creativity obviously changed the crowd’s opinion on the band standard.

The second last band, West Spring Secondary certainly had very loud and excited fan(girl)s, with ear-piercing screams before, during and after the performance. It’s not their fault, but only song I could pick out was Bon Jovi’s, It’s My Life. Nevertheless, it was still one performance that made an impression.

Last but not least, Deyi Secondary! The winner of both Best Band and Drum Major award last season. The theme this time round was Egyptian(mummies, sphinx, desert and all). Notable songs are Pirates of the Caribbean and When You Believe from Prince of Egypt. It was a thrilling display from start to finish, ending with the theme from Gokusen.

All in all, it was an awesome exhibit by all bands. I wouldn’t be surprised if our school bands start going to international competitions anytime soon.
