The location might be different, but the excitement in the air was no less than previous seasons. Yes that’s right, after so many years on the field, the biennial event has moved next door to the Singapore Indoor Stadium, a reminiscent of the arenas adopted by the much-revered Japanese High School Marching Bands. As in previous years, the hot favorites vying for the Best Display Band of the Year award were Tanjong Katong Secondary and Deyi Secondary. Cheers filled the air as friends, families and schools scream and shout for their favourite schools.
The festival started off with the Marching Assessment at 3pm. This year, four schools participated, with 2 new entries from Chong Boon Secondary and Maris Stella High. The first band to kick off the festival was Chong Boon Secondary. The band marched off a set formation with 32 members to modern tunes like Jai Ho and We’re All in This Together.
Right behind them was Montfort Secondary(ahh, my dear Alma Mater), opening with Song of the Brave, followed by Rocky, Jupiter Hymn, and The Merry Widow.
Next off were Yuying Secondary and Maris Stella High, both performing a different set formation with 64 participants. Familiar tunes from Yuying Secondary include You Raise Me Up and Space Battleship Yamato. The band definitely lived up to expectations from SYF 2008 with flashy gimmicks and props.
The last band for the Marching Assessment was Maris Stella High, who played a whole repertoire of songs across many genres like Cavetown Cappadocia, Raider’s March from Indiana Jones, I Will Survive, Nobody by Wonder Girls, Sorry Sorry by Korean boy band Super Junior, Machu Picchu, and Lord of the Dance.
